MISSION
Black Ice Women's Rugby Football Club strives to maintain a team bonded by respect and love for the game of rugby. We aim to create an inclusive environment committed to achieving our best as both individuals and a team. Through this relentless dedication and passion, we will build a community of rugby in Denver and set a precedent for women's teams to motivate and support each other in the pursuit of athletic achievement.
ABOUT
Denver Black Ice Women's Rugby Football Club is a division one women's rugby team in the Rocky Mountain Rugby Football Union. Established in 1991, Black Ice is the longest standing women’s rugby club in Colorado. We are proud to have competed in Division 1 rugby for twenty-four seasons and are regarded as an integral part of the Denver rugby community. For 25 years, Black Ice has boasted competitive players from across the country, in addition to having a strong side for beginners and rookies to rugby. Players of all experience levels are welcome and are encouraged to take part in the inclusive, fun, and competitive culture of Black Ice Women's Rugby.
In recent years, rugby has become one of the fastest growing sports in the United States, with women contributing the largest growing segment. Black Ice Rugby is committed to advancing the sport by creating an inclusive and competitive environment focused on athletic development. Approximately fifty women make up the core of Black Ice Rugby––ranging from 18 to 40-years-old. This diverse group draws in networks ranging from competitive athletes to local businesses to active community members. Black Ice prides itself on engaging and giving back to the community that has supported its growth for the past twenty-four years.
HISTORY
Black Ice Women's Rugby Club was formed in the summer of 1991 by Nealette Thomas, J.J. Graham, Kim Schroeder, and Dawn Comstock. Looking to expand rugby in Colorado, their goals were to provide more competition to the Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union (now the Rocky Mountain Rugby Football Union) and to promote a positive athletic experience for women of all ages, backgrounds, abilities, and commitment levels. They sought to emphasize the fun and excitement of rugby, and 25 years later their vision is still going strong.
